The Roots of Humanity Artist Residency
In partnership with Afropocene, Kampala
*Applications open in August 2026*

Artist Residency
Science does not only live in laboratories. It lives in the hands of weavers, the voices of griots, the eyes of photographers who know how to look at a face and see a thousand years of movement in it.
Where We Come From?
What do our bodies remember? What does it mean to carry the oldest human DNA on earth and have almost no one tell that story back to you?
This is not a science communication programme. It is an invitation to artists to think with science, on their own terms, in their own forms, from the inside.
Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking artists across any discipline working in East Africa whose practice already touches questions of identity, memory, land, body, or belonging. You do not need a background in science. You need a practice that asks serious questions and the willingness to let new knowledge change what you make.
The Partnership
The Roots of Humanity selects and places artists. Afropocene, Kampala hosts and supports them through the residency period. Together we are building a programme that treats artistic inquiry as a form of research and community knowledge as a form of evidence.
